SacAnime Winter 2017 | Friday Coverage

SacAnime is one of our favorite events every year, and it's always great start off a new year with a bang. It's practically the first event every year, making it our official kickoff to another year of conventions. Things always slow down toward the end of the year, but we can always count on SacAnime getting us back on track.

Parking was easy since our favorite parking structure on 14th and I Street had plenty of space. We arrived at Sheraton to check-in around 10:30am, and made our way to convention center with our press badges a little after 11am. It's always a given SacAnime will draw a big crowd, but seeing it crowded on a Friday was a little surprising. SacAnime Winter last year seemed less busy on that Friday since it was scheduled around the New Years holiday, so the increase in attendance was certainly welcomed.

RWBY Cosplay Gathering

We went to a few cosplay gatherings throughout the day to take pictures. The most entertaining one was Yuri!!! on Ice. Gatherings for Hamilton and RWBY also turned out great. This would be the only day that cosplay gatherings were held in their designated areas. Saturday and Sunday gatherings were relocated indoors due to rain.

There was a big celebrity presence at this convention, including reunions for the cast of Disney's Beauty and the Beast and the cast of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Nolan North (Uncharted, The Last of Us), Ashly Burch (Life is Strange, Horizon Zero Dawn), Khary Peyton (Teen Titans, The Walking Dead) and original Pokemon theme song singer, Jason Paige, were among the guests that you could meet.

Sean as Doctor Strange

Seeing friends and familiar con-goers is always a highlight at SacAnime. Many live quite far from us, so we try to maximize our time with people we haven't seen in months. In some cases, conventions like these are the only times we might see someone during the year. It's never intended to be that way, but this scenario usually happens with some people that we wish we could see more. A fair chunk of Friday was spent catching up, while still getting as much work done before the busy weekend really began.
